on-demand courses:

Building Science Basics introduces the house as a system. You will learn how the various components of a house are affected by the interactions of heat, air and moisture flow in a house, how those interactions impact indoor air quality, and the need for ventilation.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

Explain the concept of the ‘House as a System’
Describe the various ways that heat, air and moisture flows affect a house
Describe the neutral pressure plane
Describe the factors that impact indoor air quality
Explain methods of evaluating a house for indoor air quality
Describe the need for ventilation
Describe three types of ventilation systems
Recognize the signs of combustion spillage
Describe radon mitigation procedures

Healthy Indoor Environment covers the fundamentals of indoor air quality, healthy housing materials, and ventilation needs to ensure the home’s occupants are healthy and comfortable. You will learn how to identify, remedy, and avoid pollutants.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

Describe the factors that impact indoor air quality (IAQ)
Explain methods of controlling moisture
Explain how to control air pollutants in a number of situations
Describe healthy construction assembly and finish materials
Explain the causes, signs and risks of combustion spillage
Describe radon testing and acceptable mitigation methods
Explain the need for mechanical ventilation in new and existing houses
Describe the requirements of the CSA F-326 Ventilation Standard
Distinguish between types of mechanical ventilation systems

NOTE: The content of these two courses overlaps.
Building Science Basics is focussed on understanding the causes of excess energy use, drafts, and mold growth (among other things)
Healthy Indoor Environment is focussed on understanding the choices that can improve the living conditions inside a house.

Why?

Housing is essential to improving First Nations’ economic conditions through their self- determined priorities. At the same time, the housing challenges First Nations communities face are critical.

  1. People in FN communities frequently live in overcrowded houses that need significant repairs, in conditions that can trigger a whole range of health issues.
  2. Fixing these issues requires some understanding of how buildings work.
  3. A house has many different parts – walls, windows, ceilings, a foundation, a space conditioning system, and occupants and their activities – all of which interact with each other, and with the environmental conditions inside and outside the house.
  4. Changes to any part of the system affect the way heat, moisture, and air flow in a house and can dramatically affect the health of the occupants.

Building Science Basics will help you understand the 'why' behind health issues in housing: learn how air, heat, and moisture interact and how they cause problems with comfort, safety, and durability in the building. Healthy Indoor Environment will help you understand what pollutants are common in housing and how they affect health.

‘The House as a System’ approach is based on the principle that everything is connected. It acknowledges the interconnectedness of all parts and how change in one aspect alters everything that is connected to it. In that way, this approach a reflection of the concept of Msit No’kmaq ‘all my relations’.
