Energy Advisor Training
Energy Advisors help homeowners understand how their homes use energy and where improvements can make the biggest difference. They assess homes. conduct blower door testing, and use specialized software to model a home's energy performance.
Colchester County is offering free Energy Advisor Training for people interested in developing the skills to work in home energy efficiency and retrofits.
The Energy Advisor program runs from late September 2026 to early March 2027, and combines online training (on your schedule) with weekly live coaching with an expert, exam preparation, and hands-on blower door training.
What Does an Energy Advisor Do?
Energy Advisors evaluate how homes perform using the EnerGuide Rating System. Their work combines building science, field investigation, diagnostic testing, computer modelling and working directly with homeowners.
It's a career that combines working with houses, working with people and working with technical information.
What Does the Training Include?
The program takes you through the technical training and exam preparation required to begin your path toward becoming a Registered Energy Advisor. Energy Advisors are required to pass two exams before they can start working in the field.
You should plan for approximately 6–8 hours of online learning each week, completed on your schedule, plus the weekly group session.
Foundation Exam Prep
Six weeks of online training to prepare for the Natural Resources Canada Energy Advisor Foundation Exam, supported by a 90-minute live session with an expert coach each week.
Energy Advisor (HOUSE) Exam Prep
After a scheduled study break for the Foundation exam,, you'll complete a second six-week online training session focused on the EnerGuide Rating System and preparation for the Energy Advisor House Exam, again with 90 minutes of live expert coaching each week.
Hands-On Blower Door Training
Finish with a two-day, in-person blower door testing course, where you'll learn how to prepare a house for testing and gain hands-on experience using blower door equipment.

Is This Training Right for You?
You don't need to already be an energy-efficiency expert. This program may be a good fit if you're interested in houses and how they work, enjoy problem-solving and technical information, and are comfortable with a career that combines field work, computers and working with homeowners.
It can also be a good next step if you already work in construction, renovation, inspection, design or another housing-related field and want to turn that experience into a specialized role.
This is a September-to-March commitment. You'll need to make regular time for online learning, attend your weekly 90-minute coaching sessions, study for and write two exams, and attend the two-day in-person blower door course.
From Training to Work
Passing the two exams is an important step, but becoming an Energy Advisor also requires learning in the field. We'll help successful participants connect with Service Organizations for potential probationary on-the-job learning opportunities and work with industry to identify employment opportunities.
Placements and employment aren't guaranteed, but you won't be left to navigate the transition from training to work entirely on your own.

Training is offered through Colchester County's workforce development initiative at no cost to eligible participants, but seats are limited.
