LEEP Technical Forums: Step 2 on the way to Better Houses

LEEP Technical Forums: Step 2 on the way to Better Houses

Shawna HendersonJanuary 23, 2020

In January, we’ve had the opportunity to go walk through NRCan’s new CBAT tool to help determine costs for high-performance houses. In February, the residential industry in Atlantic Canada will have a chance to take in a day long session focussed on the hows and whys of high-performance housing. The sessions will take place in Halifax, Fredericton and St. John’s. Here’s the flyer for more details.

This is part of the LEEP process that NRCan has been offering to builders in BC and Southern Ontario.

LOCAL ENERGY EFFICIENCY PARTNERSHIPS (LEEP)

NRCan’s LEEP is designed to reduce builder time and risk in finding and trying innovations for building higher performance homes better, faster and more affordably. The program is delivered on a regional basis in markets across Canada. Builder groups use the LEEP process to work together to consider their opportunities and find innovations they believe are most feasible for the homes they build in their markets. There are 4 steps to the LEEP process:

  1. Builder planning workshops

  2. Technical Forums

  3. Field Trials

  4. Technology Publications resulting from builder experiences

We’re headed into Step 2: Technical forums. This is going to be a great opportunity to take advantage of a lot of accumulated knowledge. LEEP has been honing delivery of useful information about high-performance to builders for at least three years, and now the Nova Scotia residential construction industry gets to take full advantage of that.

WHAT’S ON THE LEEP FORUM AGENDA?

  • Challenge manufacturers to better meet builder needs

  • Costed best practice examples for a case study home from competing manufacturers

  • Factors to consider in selecting and designing wall systems from local experts

  • Mechanical system sizing, and new cost effective duct distribution approaches

  • An overview of what is happening in Net Zero and high performance housing nationally and in our region

  • Consider energy performance improvements you are interested in on your next builds with your peers.
